First Aid Courses & Your BASI Qualification
A valid First Aid qualification is an essential part of your BASI journey and is required before you can receive your first BASI qualification and maintain your licence to instruct. As a minimum, BASI requires a 2 day First Aid course, giving you the practical skills and confidence to respond effectively in an emergency. As ski instructors work in remote mountain environments where professional medical assistance may not always be immediately available, it is important that your training is relevant to the challenges of the outdoors and prepares you for real life scenarios that you may encounter on the mountain.
At ICE, we work with experienced first aid professionals, some of whom work in the ski industry themselves, to deliver engaging, practical courses that meet the requirements of BASI while focusing on the realities of working in an alpine environment. Through realistic, hands on training, you will develop the knowledge and confidence to assess, manage and respond to emergencies, ensuring that you are fully prepared to meet the requirements of your BASI qualification and your future career as a ski instructor.
You will need to renew your First Aid qualification every 3 years to keep your BASI license up to date once you become a full time member.
If you have any questions about the First Aid requirements or need guidance on choosing a suitable course, we are always happy to help you. You can also contact BASI directly for advice on First Aid qualifications, including whether you may be exempt from completing the course due to an existing qualification or professional background, such as working full time in healthcare or another role with an equivalent First Aid certification.

Anna Read
Anna qualified as a BASI Level 2 ski instructor in 2016 herself and has since gained valuable experience teaching in Italy for many years. After graduating from university in 2021, she began working in the ambulance service as a frontline emergency paramedic in Bristol. When she is not at work, you will find her surfing in Devon or Cornwall at every opportunity she gets.
Combining her passion for skiing with her career in emergency care, Anna has since qualified as an outdoor first aid instructor alongside her colleague and partner, Georgia. Together, they form an enthusiastic team dedicated to delivering practical, engaging, and hands on first aid courses for trainee ski instructors with ICE.
Georgia Turner
Georgia trained as a Paramedic at the University of Surrey before beginning her career in the South West of England in 2019. She has been a frontline Paramedic for six years and now works within the Learning & Development department of her trust, supporting and teaching her colleagues.
After discovering her love of snowboarding, she and her partner Anna decided to combine their passion for snowsports with their skills in first aid and complete the qualifications to teach outdoor first aid.
In her spare time, Georgia loves to travel, having recently explored sixteen countries in one year. She also enjoys photography and spends as much time outdoors as possible.

Jo Pollard
Jo Pollard is our resident physiotherapist who also provides some of our smaller first aid training groups. She regularly runs courses, both for qualified ski instructors who need their first aid training updated every 3 years, and for those who are looking for a simple FAW type of first aid qualification.
