The NZSIA has 3 divisions - Alpine, Snowboard and Telemark - and different qualifications for each discipline. Until fairly recently the authorities have not insisted on instructors being qualified but now Ski Schools will not employ anyone with a qualification lower than NZSIA Stage 1. BASI's Level 2 Instructor (formerly Grade 3) qualification is considered equivalent to Stage 1.
Work permits are required - an instructor must apply to a recognised ski school in New Zealand and obtain a job offer and contract. Once a contract is in place, the ski school will apply for a work permit and only when a permit has been granted can the instructor work for that ski school. Alternatively, application can be made direct to the NZ Government - further info on www.immigration.govt.nz
Please Note: An instructor cannot work independently in New Zealand, regardless of qualification or nationality, and resorts have the right to remove offenders from the hill!
