Skis by Salomon
The following suggestions come from our resident equipment guru Mark Jones, ICE and BASI Trainer. Mark is also the technical editor of Ski and Board magazine and is responsible for the testing of all makes of skis in March of the previous season which are then written up in issues of the magazine. It is safe to say that, having skied on all of them and also gathered the opinions of other leading ski experts, Mark knows more about this season's skis than anyone else. Literally.
Salomon are a global performance brand, that have been delivering new designs and innovation to mountain sports for many years. The ICE coaching team have been using Salomon equipment for many years, we love the speed and excitement that these skis can deliver.
Mark has specially selected the following skis which are not only great skis, but also work well on the sorts of courses that ICE run in Val d'Isere. If you are thinking of booking a course and would like more information on what skis to buy, please contact him direct at mark@icesi.org.
SALOMON ENDURO XT 800 + Z12 Speed

The Enduro is great choice for our courses, it’s a ski which is simply brilliant for all mountain use. Rock up to the meet point in the morning and you can be comfortable in the knowledge that this ski can handle anything our coaches throw at you. The 800 has a beefy construction which uses sandwich sidewalls and a full woodcore. Match this up to a reactive sidecut and you have a ski which can punch out some rock solid performance on the piste, particularly in medium to long turns it is awesome. The added bonus is that it has rocker through the nose which allows it to float up and be easy to use in deeper conditions away from the piste. The XT 800 is definitely the model of choice out of the Enduro range, the 850 is a bit too wide for shorter turns on the piste, while any models below this one are not strong enough to deal with high end piste performance.

SALOMON MUSTANG + Z12 Speed

A lot of the ICE coaches will be continuing to use this ski for the coming winter. The Mustang takes a lot of its construction from the race department skis, it uses a full woodcore matched up with titanium reinforcement. On piste this ski is a rocket, it’s fast, has huge amounts of edge grip and is a very powerful ski for high performance on the piste. It’s a great tool for long fast turns on the groomers, it’s also quick from edge to edge for short turns. Essentially, this is a fantastic choice for skiers who love to rip on the piste. In deeper snow, its stiffness and narrow shape make it a bit more of a handful.

SALOMON ROCKER 2 90

This is a brand new design which takes over from the amazingly successful Lord. If you are more into mixing it up away from the piste, fancy a bit of time in the park and still need some solid performance on the piste then the 90 is a great choice. It does not have anything like the ultimate performance of the Mustang, and is not that close to the Enduro on the groomed runs, however it does carve out a smooth arc and is quick enough on the edge so that it works well enough. In deeper snow it’s so easy, the rockered nose, smooth flex and wider platform making it great fun to use. If you match it up to the new Salomon Guardian binding it’s also a ski that would be great for some touring in the mornings.

WOMEN'S SPECIFIC SKIS
Women’s specific skis tend to use lighter constructions, a different binding placement and are available in shorter lengths. When compared to their ‘male’ counterparts they are much easier to initiate the turn and generally feel less effort to use.
SALOMON ORIGINS BAMBOO + Z10 Ti

The Bamboo is Salomon’s top of the range all mountain ski. It’s designed to give lots of accessible, high end performance on the piste while having enough of a soft flex and a rockered shape to make it forgiving in deeper snow conditions. It’s completely revamped this season with a narrower sidecut, beefier construction and the rockered shovel. It’s a ski which is exceptionally easy to use while giving out strong performance. On both long and short turns it is grippy fast, and quick on the edge, however it never loses that inherent forgiveness in its performance. It’s a ski that always feels on your side, being there to help you rather than something you are constantly battling with.

SALOMON ROCKETTE 90

This is the women’s version of the new Rocker 90. Compared to that ski it’s slightly narrower in the waist and the tail but uses the same construction. It’s a great ski to use in off piste, being easy to use with plenty of float. If you are a backcountry enthusiast then it’s a fantastic choice. On the groomed runs it carves out really nice long turns, but is not so snappy on short turns, however, generally the performance on the piste is good enough for our courses.
