Skis by Salomon

The following suggestions come from our resident equipment guru Mark Jones, ICE and BASI Trainer. Mark is also the technical editor of Ski and Board magazine and is responsible for the testing of all makes of skis in March of the previous season which are then written up in issues of the magazine. It is safe to say that, having skied on all of them and also gathered the opinions of other leading ski experts, Mark knows more about this season's skis than anyone else. Literally.

Salomon are a global performance brand, that have been delivering new designs and innovation to mountain sports for many years. The ICE coaching team have been using Salomon equipment for many years, we love the speed and excitement that these skis can deliver.

Mark has specially selected the following skis which are not only great skis, but also work well on the sorts of courses that ICE run in Val d'Isere. If you are thinking of booking a course and would like more information on what skis to buy, please contact him direct at mark@icesi.org.

SALOMON LORD

If you love backcountry skiing, fancy the odd jib in the park, yet still want to blast out carved turns on the piste, this is the ski to go for. Our coaching team tend to use the Lords most of the time, particularly when there are fresh conditions to play in. Its 87mm underfoot gives plenty of flotation in the powder. In any off piste conditions this is an incredibly easy ski to use, with the 210mm nose rocker helping the ski to rise up to the surface.  On piste, the width and softness will hold it back for high grip in short turns on icy conditions, but in well groomed pistes it is superb for carving out long turns. The Lady is the women’s version has a slightly narrower sidecut, and gets great feedback from the girls who have tried it.

Facts and figures See it on the Salomon website
Sidecut: 128-87-115
Turn radius: 17.4 (177)
Lengths available: 153 (Lady only), 161, 169, 177, 185

SALOMON TORNADO TI

The Tornado is designed for skiers who love to carve, but still want to ski deeper conditions on the days that there is fresh snow. This is a powerful ski on the groomed runs, its full woodcore and double titanium reinforcement make sure that it can hold and grip at any speeds, any conditions. It works really well in medium to long carved turns on well groomed pistes. In deep, backcountry conditions the new wider 79mm waist helps make them easy to handle, however they are too narrow for fast, long turns in super deep conditions.

Sidecut: 120-79-107
Turn radius: 16.3 (173)
Lengths available: 159, 166, 173, 180

SALOMON 24 HOURS

The 24 is designed for skiers who love high performance skiing on the piste. It has a full wood core and sandwich sidewalls to deliver the ultimate in edge grip. Compared to our other choices this ski will really excel in short, punchy turns right up to full blown carving at high speeds. This is definitely the favourite choice if you want to move your technical skiing up to another level. The other advantage is that narrower waist width makes them fast and agile from edge to edge for the bumps. In deeper off piste conditions they are trickier to use because of the width and stiffness.

Sidecut: 119-72-103
Turn radius: 15.1 (170)
Lengths available: 154, 162, 170, 178
