volcanic eruption in New Zealand - 16/08/2012
Ash cloud moves east leaving Mt Ruapehu to enjoy fresh powder

Skiers and snowboarders in the central North Island region of New Zealand have had a reminder of what lies beneath their pistes this week, as nearby Mt Tongariro erupted late on Monday 6 August. The mountain lies just 20km from Mount Ruapehu, the hotspot for North Island skiing, but also a hotspot for volcanic activity.

Eruptions on Mt Ruapehu have disrupted snowsports operations at times in the past, with the mountain widely recognised by Lord of the Rings fans as Mount Doom belching ash and sending lahars down the mountainside in September 1995, bringing the ski season to an unexpectedly early close.
The volcanic crater lake is also a draw-card for skiers and snowboarders though, and is a popular touring destination for those venturing beyond the pistes of Mt Ruapehu’s three resorts.

Luckily this time around, the ash cloud that resulted from volcanic material being spewed into the atmosphere has moved east towards Napier, and staff at the twin Mt Ruapehu resorts of Whakapapa and Turoa are eager to spread the word that the ski areas are not only open, but there’s 20cm of fresh snow on the ground.

There’s been even more snow falling on New Zealand’s South Island ski areas, with around half a metre at Mount Hutt, Mount Dobson and Fox Peak, and around 20cm at resorts including Broken River, Craigieburn and Mount Olympus.
Cardrona has received only a light dusting on new snow this week, but they’re gearing up to host FIS Freestyle World Cup Halfpipe next week. Ski Club sponsored athlete James Machon will be going up against top international freestyle skiers who are building towards Sochi 2014, where freestyle skiing (halfpipe and slopestyle) are part of the official programme.
